The twelve tribes of Israel, descended from Jacob’s sons, originated from the conquest of Canaan.

Tribal structure was integral to the Israelites “identity”, with each tribe receiving territorial allocations and blessings that shaped their spiritual and cultural lives.

The Judges of Israel were unique to each tribe, known for being charismatic leaders raised by God during times of crises to lead the Israelites against their enemies and bring them back to faithfulness with the covenant.

The demand for a King came from the people’s desire to be like other nations, despite God’s warning of potential consequences.

Kings are delegated rulers under God’s authority, expected to uphold righteousness, justice, and obedience to God’s law.

The era of the Monarchy started with Saul, followed by David and Solomon.

King Solomon’s heavy taxation and idolatry lead to devine displeasure, causing the northern tribes to rebel and form the Kingdom of Israel, while the southern tribes remained loyal to Rehoboam, marking the Kingdom of Judah.

God says he was personally maneuvering events to bring about His will. He wanted to divide Israel and Judah into two separate Kingdoms, with two separate histories - a situation that exists to this day.

The Bible records 12 major Judges and 6 minor Judges, totaling 18.

The only Queen mentioned in the Bible is Athaliah of Judah. Israel had 19 Kings before its conquest by Assyria. Judah had 20 Kings before the Babylonian exile. In total there are 42 Kings in the Bible, and 1 Queen.

BOTH Judges and Kings were appointed by God to lead His people, showing His faithfulness to His covenant promises.

BOTH Judges and Kings were empowered by the Holy Spirit to act as leaders, showing that God can use flawed individuals to accomplish great things.

This all teaches us that past failures can lead to new beginnings and contributions. God’s grace can transform brokenness into strength and purpose. Also, the importance of relying on our Lord, regardless of our imperfections.

Thank you God for your grace and strength. Amen. 🙏
