On June 27, 1898, Captain Joshua Slocum successfully completed the first solo circumnavigation of the earth. Aboard his 36-foot gaff-rigged oyster sloop, the Spray, he sailed into Newport, Rhode Island, at 1:00 a.m., ending an epic 46,000-nautical-mile journey that took over three years.
