As a school teacher, I was excited that so many states have banned cellphones in the classroom. And I am heartened that so many are warning of the mental health effects of social media on the minds of young people. But after a certain age, we live in a free society and those 18 and above are free to submerge themselves in the sewage that exist in so many dark corners of the internet.
When I think of the internet I think about how wonderful it can be. I tell my kids that if they were dedicated enough to actually use it right, there is no need to come to school. EVERYTHING there is to learn can be found on the internet. Learn math, how to play an instrument, how to eat well, how to be spiritual, how to fix your washing machine, how to build, fix and maintain anything. It is amazing.
But then I think of all the hate spewed and I recoil. And I am reminded of the first phrase transmitted over the Telegraph by Samuel Morse, except now it makes spring to my mind a dangerous and violent...
