Thomas A. Edison founded the Edison Electric Light Company on October 15, 1878, in New York City to finance his research on a practical incandescent light bulb and urban power grid.
Key Details of the Founding
Financial Backers: Supported by prominent investors including J.P. Morgan and members of the Vanderbilt family.
Primary Objective: Fund experiments to replace gas lamps and build a complete municipal electrical distribution system.
Patent Exchange: Edison transferred his lighting patents to the company in exchange for a major block of stock.
Corporate Evolution: The firm merged into the Edison General Electric Company in 1890, and later combined with another competitor to form the General Electric Company (GE) in 1892
