On this date in history (August 28, 1898), a popular soda was given the name it carries to this day.
It all started in New Bern, North Carolina, where a pharmacist named Caleb Bradham created a fountain drink he called "Brad's Drink" back in 1893.
Bradham believed his concoction was more than just a tasty beverage. He marketed it as a healthy drink that could aid in digestion.
On August 28, 1898, he officially renamed it "Pepsi-Cola," a name inspired by the medical term for indigestion, "dyspepsia," and one of its key ingredients, the kola nut.
The company saw early success but faced hardship. After World War I, Bradham speculated on sugar prices, buying a large amount when prices were high. When the market crashed, it led to the company's bankruptcy in 1923.
Despite the failure, the brand was eventually revived. During the Great Depression, Pepsi offered twice the amount for the same price as its competitors, a clever marketing move that helped it grow.
From a small-town pharmacy drink intended to help with stomach aches, Pepsi-Cola grew to become one of the most recognized brands in the world.
It stands as a testament to American enterprise and became the chief rival to Coca-Cola, sparking the famous "cola wars" for generations to come.
