August 15, 1945, marks the day Emperor Hirohito broadcast the acceptance of the Allied surrender terms to the Japanese people, though the formal, official signing of the Instrument of Surrender took place later on September 2, 1945.
Key Events of the Surrender
August 14: President Harry S. Truman announced Japan's intention to surrender to the U.S. public. Due to time zone differences, this was August 15 in Japan and parts of the Pacific.
August 15: Emperor Hirohito delivered the "Jewel Voice Broadcast" over radio, informing citizens that Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration.
September 2: The formal surrender document was signed aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, officially concluding World War II.
