If a soldier keeps remembering a war injury the same way it would be wrong to expect a different outcome. Remembering doesn't have to be a lie though.
Moral outrage can really seem like an injury if you nurture it. In this case remembering it exactly the same way can be like a shot of dopamine so why would you change it ?
Maybe it could be like sex ? And then rationalize everything from your point of view naturally. Everyone does that.
Not everyone gets a sexual charge out of it. Some people try to be rational for some reason ?
