On August 10, 1776, news reached London that the American colonies had adopted the Declaration of Independence. The document, largely written by Thomas Jefferson, had formally transformed the colonies' struggle with Britain into a declaration that they were independent states.
By this point, the conflict was no longer simply a colonial uprising. The Continental Congress had moved toward breaking British authority, while support for independence had grown throughout the colonies following the publication of Thomas Paine's Common Sense earlier that year.
The news arriving in London marked a major turning point in Britain's relationship with its American colonies. The Revolutionary War continued for several more years before Britain ultimately recognized American independence in 1783.
