With Football season rushing at ya - Some Sconni Go Pack Go! trivia:

Wisconsin Field Guide

The cheesehead hat began as an insult Wisconsin decided to wear proudly. Following the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl win in 1986, some Illinois sports fans started mocking Wisconsin fans as "cheeseheads," playing off the state's dairy identity. Milwaukee native Ralph Bruno, then in his mid-20s, never took it as an insult in the first place. "I never really thought of it as being negative because I like cheese, personally," he later said.

The hat itself came together the night before a 1987 Milwaukee Brewers home game against the White Sox. Bruno happened to be reupholstering his mother's couch at the time and grabbed a scrap of the foam stuffing, cut it into a triangle, burned holes into it with a wood burner to give it a dimpled, Swiss-cheese texture, and colored it a golden yellow. He wore it to County Stadium the next day with zero expectation it would become anything more than a joke among friends.

It didn't stay a joke for long. The hat got passed around the entire stadium that night, with curious Wisconsinites tracking Bruno down to ask where he'd gotten it. He spent two weeks showing up daily at County Stadium's retail provider, Milwaukee Sportservice, trying to get someone to take him seriously, until a manager finally noticed his persistence and agreed to sell the hats on consignment. That same year, Bruno opened Foamation, Inc., the Original Cheesehead Factory, first in Dousman, Wisconsin, before eventually relocating to St. Francis and later Milwaukee.

The hat's cultural weight only grew from there. By the time the Green Bay Packers reached Super Bowl XXXI in 1997, the cheesehead had become fully synonymous with Packers fandom, and it's since been added to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History as a genuine artifact of American sports culture. The Wisconsin State Assembly formally honored Bruno with a joint resolution in 2012, and cheesehead hats are now sold in all 50 states and more than 30 countries. In July 2023, after more than three decades running the company himself, Bruno sold Foamation outright to the Green Bay Packers organization, keeping production based in Wisconsin while officially handing his homemade couch-stuffing invention over to the team it had become permanently associated with.
