Some Aviation? History -
August 2, 1819, Frenchman Louis-Charles Guille became the first person to successfully execute a parachute jump in the United States. He performed this historic feat before thousands of spectators gathered in New York City.
Flight and Descent Details
The Launch: Guille ascended from Vauxhall Gardens in Manhattan inside a basket attached to a large, hydrogen-gas-filled balloon.
The Release: Upon reaching an altitude of roughly 8,000 feet, Guille deliberately cut the cords connecting his basket to the balloon.
The Parachute: As he fell, his umbrella-shaped parachute unfurled. The entire apparatus—basket and all—drifted through the air.
The Landing: He drifted across the East River and landed safely in Brooklyn, New York.

Because we never had cable at my house growing up (my dad didn't want them to drill holes in his house, nor pay to watch TV), the first time I saw MTV was in 1984 by my friend Julianne's house.
