Question for Tarlov: Why are you wetting your britches over the government investing in a (national security essential) company like Intel, secured by a percentage ownership? Would you rather just write an unsecured 700 million dollar check to (a green new deal boondoggle) company like Solyndra ? How'd that work out for us taxpayers?

The Obama administration’s intervention in the U.S. auto industry (primarily 2009) was a large-scale government rescue and forced restructuring of General Motors (GM) and Chrysler during the financial crisis, using funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

Ownership stakes in New GM (approximate initial structure):
U.S. government: ~60–61%
Canada and Ontario governments: ~12%
UAW’s VEBA (retiree health-care trust): 17.5%
Old GM unsecured bondholders: 10% (plus warrants for more)

Chrysler: Received government loans and support conditioned on a Fiat alliance (Fiat contributed technology and management, receiving equity that could grow over time; the UAW VEBA received a large equity stake). The government and union interests were significant.
