On this day in 1984 - Prolific studio drummer Jim Gordon was convicted of murdering his mother and sentenced to 16 years to life in prison. Diagnosed with schizophrenia after the killing, he served his time in a medical/psychiatric prison. Gordon passed away in 2023 while still in custody. He won a Grammy Award for co-writing Layla with Eric Clapton. Jim has one of the stangest, and storied careers in Rock & Roll. Jim Gordon was a one of the most successful session musicians playing drums, percussion and piano. He has played on some of the most significant albums in Rock & Roll. Gordon was credited with contributing the elegiac piano coda for the title track, "Layla". In later years, Bobby Whitlock claimed that the coda was not actually written by Gordon: "Jim took that piano melody from his ex-girlfriend Rita Coolidge.” some of the dozens of his more successful songs are below.
