Did the builders scrimp on the quality of some of the materials?
That's what happened to the first house my parents bought in 1958. The builder was trying to save money and was quite a bit light on the mortar the last 4 feet or so by the roof.
My folks sold the house to Bill Unitas (Johnny's brother), in 1982 and he repaired it.
