Some TV History -
On June 25, 1951, CBS made television history by broadcasting the first commercial color television program in the United States.
A few key details about this groundbreaking broadcast:
The Program: The special was an hour-long musical and comedy variety show simply titled Premiere.
The Talent: It featured a lineup of major stars of the era, including Ed Sullivan, Arthur Godfrey, Garry Moore, Faye Emerson, and Robert Alda.
The Reach: The broadcast was transmitted from Studio 57 in Manhattan and aired across a five-city network, reaching New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C..
The Catch: Because CBS used a "field-sequential" color system, the broadcast could not be viewed on standard black-and-white sets. It is estimated that only about 30 prototype color receivers existed in the New York area at the time, meaning the general public mostly experienced the event at public demonstrations and department stores.
