My Dad taught me so many things. They were almost all by example. He didn’t lecture us or make demands.
Some of what I learned from him.
1) Respect— most importantly respect other people.
—Listen, Don’t interrupt others to get your point across. If you disagree, you don’t always have to mention it.
—Let someone else win sometimes. It does not matter if you win or lose, the fun is in playing the game.
—Show compassion. For adults, children, for animals. Put yourself in their place and treat them like you would want to be treated.
2) Try something new and challenge yourself. Dad was not a carpenter, yet he built the most beautiful addition to our house.
3) Be kind. Dad was a gentleman and a gentle man. He was kind and understanding and put others first.
4) Have a sense of humor. Dad kept us laughing. I thought all Dads were like that, but when I visited friends, the dads usually ignored us.
5) Do the right thing.
And much more. He was a man of his word. He was honest. He was my hero, and I still miss him.
Happy Father’s Day Dad (in Heaven,) and to all the Dads here on the Gutter.
