Valentina Tereshkova made history on June 16, 1963, launching aboard Vostok 6 to become the first woman and first civilian in space. During her nearly three-day solo mission, the 26-year-old cosmonaut orbited the Earth 48 times, logging more flight time than all U.S. astronauts combined at that date.
Her remarkable journey was defined by several incredible milestones:
Skydiving Background: Tereshkova was not a trained pilot, but she was an accomplished amateur parachutist. This skill was critical, as the Vostok capsule design required cosmonauts to eject at high altitudes and parachute down to the ground upon reentry.
Solo Spaceflight Record: She remains the only woman to have completed a solo space mission.
Age Milestone: At 26 years old, she holds the record as the youngest woman to travel to space.
