Route 66, westbound from Albuquerque, started out as a camel trail.
Portions of westbound Route 66, particularly the path stretching west from Albuquerque through Arizona to the Colorado River, trace the exact path blazed by the U.S. Army's camel expeditions.
The U.S. government established the Beale Wagon Road in 1857 to find a reliable overland passage to California. To navigate the harsh desert terrains, Lieutenant Edward Fitzgerald Beale famously used a newly imported U.S. Camel Corps rather than traditional horses and mules.
This 35th Parallel camel trail was later utilized by the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, then became the National Old Trails Road, and was eventually paved as Historic Route 66
(In 1857, Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale, a Naval officer in the service of the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, was ordered by the War Department to build a government-funded wagon road along the 35th Parallel. His secondary orders were to test the feasibility of the use of camels as pack animals in the southwestern desert. This road became part of US 66.)
