On This Day In History 05/17/1875, the very first Kentucky Derby galloped into history at Churchill Downs, Kentucky. Aristides, a chestnut colt, clinched victory and set the stage for an enduring American tradition.
The event drew a crowd of about 10,000, and over the years, it transformed into a spectacle of Southern culture, with grand hats and mint juleps becoming staples. From its modest beginnings, the Kentucky Derby has grown into a global spectacle, symbolizing both heritage and competition.
Today, millions tune in to watch, honoring a race that began so humbly and has run uninterrupted, showcasing the might and grace of thoroughbred champions every spring.
