Some Space Travel History:
NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper successfully launched into space aboard the Faith 7 spacecraft on May 15, 1963, kicking off the Mercury-Atlas 9 mission. As the sixth and final crewed flight of Project Mercury, this historic mission lasted 34 hours and 20 minutes, setting a record for the longest American spaceflight to that date.
The landmark mission marked several major milestones in space exploration:
Pioneering Endurance: Cooper orbited Earth 22 times, logging more spaceflight time than all previous five Mercury flights combined. He became the first American to sleep in space and the first to spend more than 24 hours in orbit.
The Ultimate Manual Reentry: Near the end of the flight, catastrophic electrical failures caused the capsule's automatic guidance system to completely stop working. Relying purely on his test pilot training, Cooper manually steered the capsule through the blazing, superheated reentry atmosphere. He aligned the spacecraft using star patterns and ...
