8 May - Fact of the Day: Knights of the Round Table
The table of Arthur, Britain's legendary king, was first mentioned in Wace of Jersey's Roman de Brut (1155). This story told of King Arthur's having a round table made so that none of his barons, when seated at it, could claim precedence over the others. While there are many different numbers and lists of the Knights of the Round Table, the following twelve are usually included: Sir Bedivere, Sir Bors, Sir Galahad, Sir Gareth, Sir Gawain, Sir Kay, Sir Lamorack, Sir Lancelot, Sir Mordred, Sir Perceval, Sir Torre, and Sir Tristan. On the famous Winchester Round Table, which some believe was King Arthur's round table, are inscribed the names of 25 knights.
