I'm always intrigued when the topic of Detroit comes up as it did on the 5 tonight as I have lived in the burbs here forever. Most probably know this story but just a reminder. Detroit continued the growth of this country through automotive manufacturing which also created the need for the highways and helped save the world in WW2. It was destroyed by Coleman Young who drove much of the population out of Detroit destroying the tax base of a city whose huge square mileage and amount of houses could no longer support the infrastructure. Google C Young and 8 mile road quote. He did create the blue rape lights to identify phones for rape victims which were basically the only lights on the streets in the 80s.

In the past month of visiting in The Netherlands, I’ve tried not to accumulate too much extra stuff, but I decided to buy another small suitcase. I hope I can maneuver the baggage as I make my way to France next week via train. I’ve been parking my rental bike at the train station. I was able to carry the new bag on the back of the bike.
