On April 11, 1900, the U.S. Navy officially acquired its first functional submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1), designed by Irish immigrant John Philip Holland. The 53-foot 10-inch vessel (often cited as 53 or 54 feet) was commissioned later that year on October 12, 1900, at Newport, R.I.. It was the first to combine electric motors for submerged travel and gasoline engines for surface cruising, setting the standard for modern submarines.

Dimensions: It was 53 feet 10 inches long and had a beam of 10 feet 3 inches.
Design & Power: It featured a revolutionary dual-propulsion system: gasoline engines for the surface and electric motors for submerged, powered by batteries.
Armament: The vessel was equipped with one 18-inch torpedo tube, along with 3 torpedoes, and also had a dynamite gun.
Crew: The submarine was operated by a crew of seven.
