On April 8, 1974, Atlanta Braves outfielder Hank Aaron hit his 715th career home run off Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Al Downing, breaking Babe Ruth’s legendary 39-year record of 714 homers. The historic shot occurred in the fourth inning at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium before 53,775 fans, marking a milestone against racist threats.

The Moment: In the 4th inning, Aaron hit a 1-0 pitch from Al Downing into the left-center field bullpen.

Significance: This home run surpassed Babe Ruth’s record, which had stood since 1935.

The Crowd: The game was attended by a record-setting crowd of 53,775, the largest in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium history.

Background: Despite receiving hate mail and death threats due to the racist climate, Aaron broke the record in his second game of the 1974 season.

Final Count: Aaron finished his career with 755 home runs.
