Welcome to the "So You Think You're Good With Manly Machines" confession of ignorance and/or stupidity.
Since we are going to lose our power for at least a couple of days, I was forced to get out the generator I bought 10(?) years ago and had never actually started. It had the instructions on the top and I thought I was following them. Fill with gas, open the gas valve, set the choke and pull chord. Except the choke and the gas valve didn't actually have anything on them that said (Open/closed). Gas valves are always "in line-open, right angle-closed...not this one. And the picture for the choke showed something very ambiguous.
Pulled the started cord multiple times, nothing
I thoought I had every right, but upon looking the choke open, choke closed pictures closely, Irealized I had them wrong and thought I had flooded the engine....so I waited awhile and...set the choke correctly and tried again
nothing
Thought I was going to have to remove the spark plug and dry it off but upon looking at the gas valve and the gas valve picture closely realized that it hadn't been getting any gas at all because the valve was closed!
Got everything set right and it started on the second pull!
Came in cussing myself and laughing at the same time and confessed it all to my wife...who periodically admits I am fairly handy...but this time just shook her head. There were about 7 times in the last ten years where she asked me "Have you checked the generator and made sure it's working...and I lied and said yes every time because I knew in each of those cases the power would be back on in 12 hours or less and it was would be a lot of hassle for very little benefit.
But I am stuck this time. All this will be moot if my fucking propane company delivers my propane tomorrow

My faucets are on drip, I have my contingency supplies - water, nonperishable foods including trail mix, protein bars, NutriGrain bars, granola bars, canned milk for making a pitcher when needed, canned oysters for poor man's oyster stew, canned Chef Boyardee spaghetti and meatballs, ramen noodles, ramen cups, instant potatoes, cereal, bread, and peanut butter - ready to go whether the power goes out or not, I've got my flashlight on standby, I've taken my meds, and now I'm going to bed. Good night, y'all, and stay safe.
