Some Illuminating History

On New Year's Eve, December 31, 1879, Thomas Edison, in Menlo Park, New Jersey, gave the first public demonstration of his successful incandescent light bulb, illuminating his lab and streets with about 100 bulbs, proving the viability of his carbon-filament lamp and creating the "Village of Light". This event marked a huge step toward practical, widespread electric lighting, thanks to his durable filament and supporting electrical system. 

Key Details of the Demonstration:

Location: Menlo Park, New Jersey.

Date: December 31, 1879 (New Year's Eve).

What: Illumination of roughly 100 bulbs, transforming the area into a "Village of Light".

Significance: Showcased the first practical incandescent lamp, featuring a long-lasting carbonized thread filament and a complete system for electricity generation and distribution.
