At wounded knee…
This is a story about my first visit to the ‘Badlands’ of South Dakota, eight years ago.
I made sure we visited ‘Wounded Knee’.
As a ‘youngster’ I saw this picture of Chief Bigfoot, or Spotted Elk, dying in the snow.
It has always stayed with me.
I wanted to visit his grave.

We were at the Wounded Knee massacre sight. Sioux Indian Reservation, South Dakota.
The state of the upkeep, of the field, where 300 un-armed Americans (Sioux Ghost Dancers) were massacred.
By the United States Army.
Above the field across the road was a cemetery.
We went into the cemetery, I found the mass grave for Ghost Dancers. Nearby was a marker for Chief Bigfoot.
The photo of him dying in the snow had affected me as a teen.
I wanted to place a stone on his marker. All of the stones in the cemetery were associated with other graves. So I walked out of the cemetery to look for a stone.
As I was standing there, a 3-4 year old girl approached me.
She was wearing a blue pullover with little yellow flowers.
