I was in shock this morning during the homily in church. The priest actually turned the tragedy of the horrible flood in Texas into a story of racism. He told the story about the 2 young counselors of a camp who saved the 20 small children under their care. This could be a moment to uplift all of us to imitate the bravery of these young heroes. Instead, he talked about their being Mexican and have been subject to racism with the deportation of illegals in America. He was comparing it to the gospel of the good Samaritan and made sure to mention the Jewish man who walked by and didn't help. I looked at the gospel when I got home to confirm the story describes a Levite (He wanted to make sure everyone knew this meant Jewish). I almost made it to the end of the service until he decided to launch into a testimonial about Catholic Relief services. I walked out before he suggested donations to this child trafficking operation.
