On June 27, 1898, Captain Joshua Slocum successfully completed the first solo circumnavigation of the earth. Aboard his 36-foot gaff-rigged oyster sloop, the Spray, he sailed into Newport, Rhode Island, at 1:00 a.m., ending an epic 46,000-nautical-mile journey that took over three years.

Departure: April 24, 1895, from Boston, Massachusetts.

Duration: 3 years and 2 months (approx. 38 months).

Distance Traveled: 46,000 miles.

Name: Spray

Length: (11.2 \, m) (36 ft 9 in)

Milestone: First person in history to sail single-handedly around the world.

Legacy and Disappearance

Literary Success: Slocum later chronicled his journey in the international best-seller "Sailing Alone Around the World," which remains a classic in maritime literature.
