In 2008, Elon Musk was running out of time.
Three Falcon 1 launches had failed. More than $100 million was gone. Tesla was on the brink of collapse. He was borrowing money from friends just to pay his bills.
This photo was taken after one of those rocket crashes. No cameras. No speeches. No excuses. Just a man sitting in the wreckage, trying to figure out what to do next.
He had enough resources for one final launch.
The fourth Falcon 1 mission succeeded.
Days later, NASA awarded SpaceX a $1.6 billion contract. Around the same time, Tesla secured emergency funding just hours before the company would have missed payroll for over 1,000 employees.
Musk later described 2008 as the worst year of his life.
He never quit.
The next time you feel like giving up, remember the man sitting in that wreckage. Your breakthrough could be one more attempt away.
