On this day in history, July 23, 1962, Telstar 1 carried the first publicly transmitted live television signal across the Atlantic, linking viewers in the United States and Europe in real time.
The broadcast went out at 3:00 p.m. EDT and followed an earlier, private test signal sent on July 11. Bell Laboratories built the satellite for AT&T, and NASA launched it from Cape Canaveral on July 10.
The historic telecast included images from both sides of the ocean, with Walter Cronkite helping anchor the American side. Reports described a 20-minute exchange that reached more than 200 million viewers and showed how fast satellite communications could reshape television.
Telstar 1 became a milestone in global broadcasting and a symbol of the new space age. Its success helped open the era of live international TV and commercial satellite communications.
