Morning Gutter Gang. I never made it back to the Gutter last evening for my little Gutter After Dark posting and darned if I didn't have some good stuff lined up to share. But Claire and I did have a decent evening at home after enjoying a Summer type dinner of salad, corn and lobster. What the heck, great sales on those crustaceans this time of year 'round here. The she had me watching one of those cable channels with repeats of so many old programs--last night we watched a couple episodes of Columbo. I had forgotten how much I liked Peter Falk's portrayal of that character.
Enough of last night's summary. It's getting hot and gonna stay that way for the forecasted future. Man, it seems like everyone is hitting the beach these days, even Albert Einstein per Counting Crows. Enjoy...

On June 28th, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, ending World War I. Signed exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Treaty of Versailles formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It reshaped the global map, imposed harsh penalties on Germany, and established the League of Nations.

Key Terms and Conditions

The treaty imposed severe physical, financial, and military restrictions on Germany:

Territorial Losses: Germany lost approximately 13% of its European territory and all of its overseas colonies. The pivotal industrial region of Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France.

Financial Reparations: Under the controversial "War Guilt" clause (Article 231), Germany was held solely responsible for the war and was subjected to massive, unquantified financial reparations.

Military Disarmament: The German army was capped at 100,000 soldiers. The German navy was heavily restricted, and the country was forbidden from possessing an air force or ...
