THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On February 22, 1980, the U.S. Olympic hockey team defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union team 4-3 in the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y., in a shocking upset remembered as the "Miracle on Ice."
Coached by Herb Brooks, the young American squad overcame a 3-2 deficit in the third period with goals from Mark Johnson and team captain Mike Eruzione. The game, immortalized by announcer Al Michaels' "Do you believe in miracles? YES!" call, came to symbolize a major Cold War-era victory, with the U.S. later defeating Finland to win the gold medal
